Cant switch users in Knoppix- Screen goes to standby

I can't seem to figure this out- I installed knoppix on my hard drive, but I tried to switch users, and my monitor went to standby and did not come back. A restart solved the problem, I could log into whichever user I wanted to, but obviously, this is highly annoying and far from ideal, so I was wondering if anyone else has had/solved this problem, and even if anyone has HEARD of this before. I am running an ATI raden 9000 on an AMD t-bird 800 if it makes a difference. Knoppix 3.2. Also if anyone has any reviews about whether Knoppix 3.3 is worth the upgrade, plz let me know...

Thanks.

I have just installed knoppix 3.3 onto my hard drive (over the top of the debian sarge that I had).

I don't know if I did the install any different from you, but I haven't had any snags like that - I'm just struggling to get it to boot from the hard drive (triple boot of XP, Mandrake 9.1 and the knoppix).

Can you swich to root in a terminal? or is the problem that you can't switch graphically?

Only that under mandrake, I remembered that they had root as a hidden user by default and you had to go into the kde login manager and unselect the hiden user thing.

regards

John

John,

I can switch to root in console, and I can even boot to root from the login screen if i restart the computer....but I cant seem to log out and get back to the login screen- the screen goes blank and my monitor goes to standby. Naturally, this is perplexing....I have knoppix 3.2 installed on my laptop also and I dont have this problem. I am dual booting winxp on both my laptop and my desktop. Let me know if you got any other ideas...im stumped. BTW, is there a big difference between 3.3 and 3.2? I guess what Im asking is whether or not you think it is worth the trouble of upgrading? Thanks.

Ryan

Hell, if you've got the bandwidth and time, I'd do the upgrade.

Though if you find that you have to reboot the system to be able to get a root login facility, then is it not a kde problem? though it almost sounds like it could be a power management thing (though I suspect not).

You should, afterall, be able to "log out Ryan" and get the "log in as a different user" option ??

And I still think that despite having snags myself - in setting up my system to boot from the hard drive, that Knoppix hdd install is as close to getting a debian based system to install in a "mandrake like" way, as you're going to get.

regards

John
