Angry cant get the S3 card to ork in X Debian Sagre

Hello ,

I have 2 identical IBM boxes & I would like to use them for web servers.
These boxes have S3 Virge with 4MB of video memory.

Right now I am trying some distros to see what fits me best.
Unfortunately I cant get the S3 work with Debian.
I tried Xf86config or something ,opened the box, checked the onboard VGA chipsetto be sure ,but no matter what i tried ,I always tooked the message ,°no valid clocks found°
or somethin like this

PLEASE NOTE ,that one of this boxes is currently running Suse 9.3 prof.,at 1152x864 75hz.
In fact I am posting using this !!!!!

any ideas ?????

I would try to reconfigure the display selecting a generic vesa graphics adapter..
During the Debian install I did, that was the only option that worked for me even if I selected the nvidia driver ( I have a Geforce 6600 ).
Of course the problem desapeared after I installed the proprietary Nvidia drivers.

S3 works now @ 800x600

Installed Debian again ,works now

for anyone with S3 virge chipset ,

just select S3 virge server ,and advanced monitor config.Just be sure to have your screen's horizontal & vertical sync range handy to fill in.

Thanks

---What bit-depth? 24 bits, I presume....

---That's right. Months ago I had a similar issue with a Virge under Woody, and later under Sarge. And don't forget the numbers, as well:

....with 4mb you should be able to run up to 1280x1024@24 bits.

24 bits=3 bytes.

So 1280x1024x3=3932160 bytes=3,75 mb.

As for the v.freq settings, it may depend on the chipset and clock of the card.
