Cannot open display?


As root when I try a program it often say it cannot open display How get round?

This happens if you're logged in X as a regular user. You can open a xterm and run
Code:
xhost +localhost
su -
Password: (give the root password)
export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0
After that you can run any X application as root.

A simpler method is to download/install "sux" and then

 sux -
Password:
(and then start the application you want as root in X)
