Cannot get DVD to play Xine

Hello

I have just installed Debian 3.0r1, and have upgraded to kernel 2.4.26-1-686. All seems ok, but I cannot get Xine to play DVD's??

aosborne@chestnut:~$ xine &
[1] 2856
aosborne@chestnut:~$ This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.1.
(c) 2000-2003 The xine Team.
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 1-rc4a from http://xine.sf.net
libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.
libdvdread: Can't stat /dev/dvd
No such file or directory
libdvdnav: vm: faild to open/read the DVD

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have xine working on other distro installs, but they were automatically set up.

Thank you

Make sure /dev/dvd is actually your dvd player, if not change it . Try libdvdcss for regionally encoded dvd's.

Thank you

I have now downloaded appropriate dvd codec.

Looks like my issues are a bit more deeply rooted. As I performed the most basic install, I will have to focus, for the time being, on installing some basic system utilities (I dont even have tar or bzip2 loaded to extract the codec!)

You shouldn't need those utils(in this particular case anyway, they ARE good thing to have however). There is a deb available.

Download this:

http://download.videolan.org/pub/lib...2.8-1_i386.deb

Open a console and change to the directory where you saved it then do the following as root:

Code:
# dpkg -i libdvdcss2_1.2.8-1_i386.deb
Done.
