Here's what happens when I try to install cups:

prison:/home/bill# apt-get install cups
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Package cups is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
W: Couldn't stat source package list file: sarge/main Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/_cdrom_dists_sarge_main_binary-i386_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)

E: Package cups has no installation candidate

Any help. Thanks

I would consider running "apt-get update". You probably have changed your apt sources list without updating.

Hope you learn to like food soon.

There's no package called "cups" in sarge/stable (it's "cupsys").

You could try "aptitude --with-recommends install foomatic-bin". Too bad that they've removed the "foomatic-bin" package from testing & unstable, but in sarge/stable that command should install all the packages that are needed for printing with HP printers (including the hpijs driver).
