BZFlag missing gl.h compile error

BZflag fails to compile (sarge version). It complains about "missing gl.h", but (of course) gl.h is present. I have been plowing the source files, but can't find a thing.

Another funny thing is that the test command outputs it will build the client, but the actual configure tells me it won't!?

Correct output>> ./configure --enable-debug LDFLAGS="-lpthread"
Wrong output>> ./configure
Wrong output>> dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -uc -us

Google didn't help, there are more out there with the same error, but I haven't found any answers yet.

Using export LDFLAGS="-lpthread" fixed it (figures...). The new BZflag 2.0.4 is awesome
