What is your sound card make? Are you using OSS driver or ALSA driver? ALSA drivers are better than OSS drivers.

Have you tried playing with the sound levels? Install aumix and see if you can play with the gain etc. I've had trouble with distortion on some mp3's and changing the pcm and or gain levels seemed to help.

yeah i got it fixed. i ran alsamixer and changed the levels of the sound and it worked. now my only problem left is the sound lag/glitch in UT2004.. it works and runs fine but, whenever you fire, or a new sound is played, theres a 1 second lag. i first noticed it while loading the game when it shows the nvidia logo (where the guy breaks the logo).

If you're still having this problem, I had it too. I just ran 'alsamixer'
and lowered the PCM setting while increasing the headphone setting.
Got the volume I was missing and all the distortion went away.

Using xmms under Slack 10 listening to mp3's. Much happier now

cheers
