aptitude remove portmap question

Hi Guys

This is my first post as a Debian user having only just recently installed the distro (previously I have used Suse, Slackware and Gentoo).
Quite a few things are done differently in Debian, so I have some homework to do.
Something that occured while I was hardening the system has made me curious. I was removing unwanted services using aptitude from the command line because I didn't like the look of the menu screen.
I entered "aptitude remove portmap" and was informed that 111 packages would be removed - basically the whole of the Gnome DE. Obviously I aborted, but I wouldn't have expected this to happen. Assuming that it was me that did something wrong, could someone tell me what it was?

Not sure about portmap in particular, but sometimes when you remove/update things in testing or especially in unstable things get removed that you wouldn't expect. If you're using Sarge, I'm a little surprised by this... You can always try apt-get remove portmap and see if it doesn't remove so many things...
