i ran apt-get update; apt-get upgrade; apt-get dist-upgrade
which worked fine but now i get the errors mentioned above.
I'm pretty new to debian. I recently switched from slackware which I ran for a number of years
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys 1F41B907
gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys 529B8BDA
apt-key add /root/.gnupg/pubring.gpg

Meaning you add the last 8 characters.

Add the last 8 characters where?

Sorry, but the message about adding characters doesn't make sense.

When you type in apt-get update there is no form or input screen to allow inputting anything, apt just downloads the latest current list of available updates.

I meant that instead of BB5E459A529B8BDA you add the last eight 529B8BDA
IIRC stable doesn't yet use gpg sigs.

If it's not erroring out and you get packages from the server you can just ignore the error.
