The usb_modeswitch package wouldn't give me a clean compile, and i have to break away from this for now, and just keep limping along with a Windows connection until i can find the time and energy to follow TobiSGD's (among others) advice and upgrade to a newer release.

Thanks all for suggestions.

Designed to run an as little as 60mg ram. Based on Debian Squeeze. There are lots of choices.

The new member of the Ubuntu family, Lubuntu is designed to run on 256mb ram.

Either of the above should run on your box with ease.
