I want to recompile my existing kernel to make a few minor changes but using the rest of the configuration as it is without having to go through every compile option. So after doing;
cp /boot/config-kernel_version .config
do I run make menuconfig or make oldconfig ?
Use make menuconfig then second option from bottom once it loads is Load configuration from file type in /boot/config-2.?.??-??? replacing the question marks with the actual numbers of the file then go through and change the configuration as you want when you exit it will ask you if you want to save new configuration say yes.
Since my original post I have read that /boot/config-kernel_version should be copied as .config to my quote: "kernel source directory".
Is this /usr/src or /usr/src/linux?
Well /usr/src/linux is a symbolic link you create to where you have your real kernel sources but that would be essentially correct except nothing would go into the /usr/src/linux but the actual source tree your better off just loading the file into menuconfig make the changes then save.
