Alsaconf can't detect Intel 810 integrated sound

Any idea what might be causing this to happen? I get "no supported PNP or PCI cards found". I was able to get it to work in Fedora by compiling the kernel and compiling ALSA as well, but in Debian I can't seem to compile ALSA - I just get this after a while:

make -C /lib/modules/2.6.8-2-386/source SUBDIRS=/home/ed/src/alsa-driver-1.0.9bO=/lib/modules/2.6.8-2-386/build modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.8-2-386/source: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [compile] Error 2

Why did you decide to compile the kernel and ALSA in the first place? Didn't the Debian binary packages work? If you decided to compile from source without trying the Debian packages first, just because compiling had worked in Fedora, then I'd suggest that you get rid of the stuff you compiled and try the official Debian packages.

also it looks as if it looking for the kenrle source which u do not have in place

install the kenrel-source package

No, the binary packages didn't work. I'll try again to make sure I really did have the kernel source installed, though; I thought I did but maybe I didn't.
edit: well, reinstalling the kernel-source package and compiling the alsa-driver seems to have done the trick!
