Hey, is it just me? or is this a general problem? Here I was playing America's Army(great game) in Debian linux the sound of bullets everywhere. but little did I know there were people on Gaim trying to get in touch with me. I couldn't hear the Gaim noises, what is up? It's not because of the game noises. I started up XMMS and played some mp3's and tried to test the sounds with Gaim, with the same problem. When ever something is playing music, Gaim won't make a sound. anybody have any ideas on how to fix this? I need to be able to hear the Gaim noises through what ever music or games i'm playing.
quentusrex; for u (3) steps with issues: 2nd kernel module may need corrected, 3rd permission , 4th configuration. check all of these step by step. it is boring & annoying but whom else is going to do it? use all & any
resources available to overcome problem.
1. Gaim sound works. If nothing else is making 'noise' then i can hear Gaim very well.
2. XMMS works fine.(when alone)(haven't tested it with another sound producing program)
3. Permission problem? maybe... I think it might have something to do with two programs trying to make 'noise' at the same time... i've yet to try to have gaim run a sound and have something else try...
Ok, I'm relatively new to Linux(only been working with it off and on for 18 months) and I am brand new to Debian. So if you have any ideas please be specific on what you think could be wrong, what you think could gather the needed info, and what you think could fix it. If there is theory behind anyone of the previously mentioned please feel free to explain. I would greatly like to know how this system works.
Ok, I believe I've narrowed it down. When ever one program has control of the sound, no other program can access it. Here's what I did: I started up XMMS to play a long song(music from The Last Samurai, good movie great music). Then I went into the "Start"(if there is a different linux name please tell me) to Settings, Control Center,Sound and Multimedia, Sound System, then tested the sound. I heard nothing. I turned XMMS off, and tested sound again and this time i heard it. I started up XMMS and tried to test sounds from Gaim, nothing except for the XMMS sound. I set a timer to play a sound in 3 minutes and started up America's Army. I heard America's Army music, but no timer sound. I exited AA and checked to see if the timer had gone off, it had. I tested the timer with no other sounds running and it worked with sound. Anyone have any ideas? Why aren't all the sound programs sharing sound? I know it's possible, cuz Windows can do it.
quentusrex; ha ur still in w,s mode oh oh! treading water over ur head. advice try not to think w. it is confusing u right, right. slow down read anything everything on howto linux it will ease u into linux mode smoothly
less painless & lots more enjoyable time with linux. been their done that & here am i . paddling along helping other and self. on joy oh joy!
well, i read that post. I might have missed something but I still can't get it to work. Haha, yeah penguin I know i was treading on thin ice mentioning Windows, but it was for a good cause. I was trying to stir up some attention and get someone to prove that Linux is as good if not better than Windows. I already know it is, but i wanted someone to prove it. Can ya blame me? My girlfriend is getting ticked off at linux cuz she sends me a message and if i'm playing America's Army or listening to music I don't ever hear the brings or brungs.(i took and used the original AIM sounds for Gaim.)
Does anyone else have a problem with getting two applications to play sounds at the same time? I hope it's not just me, and I hope someone has gotten it to work somehow. I'd greatly appreciate any and all help.
