Hi,
Well, I am running Sarge with kernel 2.6.8-2-686.
I have an AMD Sempron 2200+, 256 Mo RAM on this box
Motherboard is Asrock K7S41GX, built-in video and sound card unfortunately.
3 D acceleration is not enabled.
I have searched a lot in threads concerning this issue.
I have also posted on other sites but so far nothing very helpful.
I found that to know if direct rendering is enabled , this has to be typed :
glxinfo |grep direct
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
The result speaks for itself.. Now, the most difficult part : how to enable it ?
Should I get some libs that are currently missing on my system? Is there a driver to be d/loaded ?
Video is choppy on wmvs and mpegs, whereas I use fluxbox and have a very lightweight system.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
AAMOF, I posted a previous thread about sound stopping in Firefox in case of fast scrolling, and according to a poster on a Debian-related site, this should be linked with the issue on the video card. I could post a copy of my XFree86conf file later if needed.
Here is the relevant section in my config file :
1)
Section "Device"
Identifier "Carte vidéo génériquei"
Driver "vesa"
VideoRam 64
EndSection
2)
Now here is what I gather from the specs of the motherboard :
it's a SiS 741 GX Chipset
3)
And now this is the Modules section showing that the relevant ones are enabled
but don't work in effect :
Section "Module"
Load "GLcore"
Load "bitmap"
Load "dbe"
Load "ddc"
Load "dri"
Load "extmod"
Load "freetype"
Load "glx"
Load "int10"
Load "record"
Load "speedo"
Load "type1"
Load "vbe"
EndSection
4)
I also had a look at my XFree86.0.log which I can't print here, it only shows that the generic driver is activated by
default.
Now I looked on the XFree86 site and found someone had tried to make drivers for these chips, followed a very long and detailed explanation about them, on this person's own site. Now if I can't make sense of it all, is there anything more to look into ?
Thanks in advance.
All right everything is set up now. No longer any sound problem in firefox and my video card works in 3D mode.
Now for those who may have the same video card : SIS 741 GX , you need a driver and its utility.
Fortunately, there is a site in which you will find it and be able to add in your sources.list.
here it is :
Congrats on solving the problem samael26 and thanks for posting back with the solution that worked for you. It will be a help to other future readers with the same issue -- J.W.
