Installation of windows, linux

Posted 12-02-2006 at 12:14 AM by ruhler

My hard drive a few weeks ago started making this awful grinding noise. Its replacement showed up in the mail the other day, so I went about installing windows and linux.

The Windows installation was from the restore cd that came with my dell, which is two and a half years old now. The installation took (just windows and updates, no apps):

2 hours
6 reboots
83 windows updates
3 message boxes telling me to go to some website because otherwise my computer would die.
6.09 GB after a clean installation.

The linux installation was of etch rc1. It took (including the major applications I use):

30 minutes
1 reboot (though i didn't have to reboot, i just felt like it)
0 windows updates
0 message boxes telling me to go to some website because otherwise my computer would die.
638 MB after installation with my favorite apps.

My, how I love linux.
