Running a Genetic Algorithm on an Amazon EC2 Cluster

I've started working on a simple tool to run genetic algorithms on a Linux cluster. I'm using MIT's StarCluster utility to create an on-demand Linux cluster on Amazon's EC2 cloud computing service. Using this as a starting point it should be pretty easy to deploy as much computing power as I want (budget permitting).

Step one was Amazon Web Services (http://aws.amazon.com/) sign up. I already had a normal Amazon account,...

I recently bought a new laptop from dabs.com preinstalled with windows 7, and have now set it up as a dual boot ubuntu/windows 7 machine. So far I only use win7 for playing eve-online. Here are some notes about the laptop and install process in case they are of any use to anyone considering buying a new laptop for linux.

I use an editor called kate from the KDE project, and I'm currently trying to figured out what the heck is going on with automatic indentation, and thought I would document the process in the hope of helping someone else avoid this problem. I'm using Kate version 3.4.2. [Jump to the summary at the end if you're in a hurry]

I'm writing a virtual machine in C. This is mainly to teach myself more about how computers work, but maybe of interest to other people. I was inspired by listening to Steve Gibson on the security now podcast talk about the PDP-8. He is planning to write his own complete operating system for this early computer as a fun project.

The PDP-8's instruction set sounds a bit too restrictive to me, so I have tried to come up with a minimum level of complexity that would allow me to write...

today I took the disk (see previous post /questions/blog/robertvi-358970/problems-with-new-external-hard-disk-1711/) back to the shop with my receipt, and a helpful attendant plugged it into a windows laptop there, and noticed that it said "this device can perform faster" meaning that it was only working as a usb1 device (uhci, not ehci) under windows as well. so i swapped the disk for a 320GB one, after she first checked the new disk by plugging it into the windows laptop.

at home, I can...
