Just trying to jot down whatever I think I should remember about doing stuff in/with Linux (OpenSUSE, Fedora and Linux Mint mainly)

After installing yet another distro in my machine, the bootsplash (the screen that shows up while booting with a progress bar -- for Ubuntu, Mint etc) started acting weird: After showing up, and the blip going to and fro a couple of time -- the splash disappeared and all the textual progress started showing up.
2. The best way (I guess) is to do it the hard way -- download the driver from the ATI site and manually configure/build/install it; This guide worked for me. Note: for openSUSE 11.1, instead of 103 use 111)
3. All the desktop effects are working now and as a welcome side-effect, openoffice.org is not crashing anymore like it...
Sometimes you'll find some files in your trash that just won't go away. And unlike what many forums say, the Trash in Gnome is not in the .Trash directory in /home (At least not in my Fedora 10 and Linux Mint). So this is what you'll have to do:

sudo rm -rf ~/.local/share/Trash/files/*
Yes, that's correct: the Trash folder is in /home/<yourusername>/.local/share/Trash

If you have multiple sound cards, installing pulse volume manager is almost a must (IMHO).
1. Set the default sound cards from the pulse volume manager
2. From the 'Playback' tab, you should be able to 'shift' the sound stream to the appropriate sound card that you want when you're playing something in that application e.g. playing a youtube video in Firefox...
In Fedora, after making a small and harmless change in my fstab following what it said here, ALL the partitions started mounting and APPEARING on my desktop. That made the desktop look totally obnoxious.
Here's what I had to do.
I had to install the 'gconf-editor'

su -c 'yum -y install gconf-editor'
and then I launched the gconf-editor from the Applications -> System Tools -> Confguration Editor
