And the scapegoat must always be degraded; one does not say, "The Jews are to blame and the Jews are saints and heroes." The disease must always have a degrading diagnosis, the degree of degradation varying with factors such as social status and the likely effect of the specific.
The true diagnostic criteria therefore are blame and degrade the patient, science has little to do with it.
Children a Special Case
But it is often culturally difficult to blame and degrade a child. In this case we must blame a convenient, low status adult instead, usually, but not always, the mother. Thus the shaken baby, cot death, Munchhausen syndrome, witch trials; in which that it is an unnatural act for a woman to kill her own young is stressed not by the defence, as would be reasonable, but by the prosecution. The man, of whom it is well known that 'The he wolf eats the she wolf's young', is only prosecuted if he is working class and the mother middle.
In the past disease was therefore a punishment from God for sin - blames and degrades. In a secular age we have heard of Freud for one reason alone - all psychological explanations for disease blame and degrade.
