Quirks? Annoying, but...

Posted 01-27-2006 at 07:56 AM by fredmt

I like the Fedora Linux distribution; I really do. In fact, I have been a big fan of Fedora before it was formally known as Fedora; back when it was simply called Red Hat. I bought my first RH book when RH was v.5 and even that has changed. It is now called RHEL...

I like GNOME also; has used nothing but the GNOME desktop except for a few minutes when I tried all the other available desktops/browsers which, if all that time was to be added up, wouldn't last longer than two hours throughout my GNU-Linux experience.

Additionally, I cannot write a program, a script, a whatever: I have tried but I cannot and though I haven't given up ever accomplishing such task, I am more interested in being a Linux USER than a tinkler.

That being said, I am having a long running but annoying quirk with my FC4. Shortly after upgrading from FC3, Evolution suite stop working. Oh yes, the application would load as it was set as my default mail program but evolution would quit immediately. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it numerous times but that didn't seem to fix the problem.

As an aside: I switched to Thunderbird so nothing is lost but here is my delimma...

I have been thinking about switching to another GNU-Linux distribution, though I have been unsuccessful trying to build a RSYNC server in the hopes of automatically copying my data over to another machine.

This is, in one respect, a double edged sword because the two issues are not mutually exclusive. I am using a different OS for the server, in the hopes of eventually making that my desktop version as well. I have tried Fedora and am currently experimenting with Debian. I have also tried the various blends of MEPIS and Ubuntu, which I must say, makes an excellent laptop OS.

Because Debian is at the opposite end of the spectrum, with regards to Fedora, I being very cautious with my experimenting; the system layout may be similar but the debian-way-of-doing-things is certainly different: I am still getting use to the different command; apt & apt-get vs. yum.

FC may be bleeding edge but I am more inclined to pick stability over eye candy...
