Can you give me some advices about installing Ubuntu?

Posted 03-30-2008 at 03:44 PM by fluidistic

I'm not used to linux, but I've downloaded a live cd version of Ubuntu. I would like to install it on a hard drive. I already have a partitioned hard drive under windows XP, which biggest part has 119 Go on which about 80 Go are still free. Instead of installing Ubuntu in this disk, I thought about buying a new disk, say about 80Go. This way I would conserve a large space for windows, and I guess that if something goes wrong during the installation of Ubuntu I would't lose any Windows files. Am I right?
Another question is : when installed Ubuntu 7.10, will I be able to upgrate it easily to the newer versions?
I keed my other questions for later.
PS: My live cd of Ubuntu works great.
