Chromium display anomaly under Ubuntu 14.04 Gnome

Posted 09-28-2014 at 07:05 PM by flshope

I encountered a display anomaly with Chromium 37 while running with desktop Gnome (Metacity) under Ubuntu 14.04. Whenever I start Chromium, it is displayed in all workspaces rather than in just the one where it was started. Sweeping the cursor over one of the workspaces where it should not be showing causes little blocks of the desktop to show through wherever an icon is located. Clicking the mouse opens an application if an icon lies beneath the cursor, leaving part of the screen showing Chromium...

Ubuntu 14.04 upgrade succeeds on 3-yr-old computer

Posted 09-14-2014 at 01:55 PM by flshope

After my traumatic upgrade experience on my old computer, I was not looking forward to risking a disaster with my primary machine. However, after much backing up of data and hand-wringing, I went ahead with the Ubuntu 14.04 upgrade today. It went OK and took about 3 hours including package download. The machine appears to be operating normally, graphics and all. I don't detect any speed degradation with the display or applications software. Sometimes you win one!

The machine just...

Ubuntu 14.04 upgrade fails on 11-yr-old computer

Posted 09-06-2014 at 11:09 AM by flshope

I have an 11-year old computer running Ubuntu 12.04. The Software Manager has had the 14.04 upgrade available for about a month now, and I decided to give it a try. Since OS upgrades have traditionally been disasters for me, I decided to try the 14.04 upgrade on the old machine before risking my primary machine. If you happen to read my LQ blog, there are entries referring to Pogo2003, as I call my old machine.

The upgrade installer program warned me that some of my hardware wasn't...

Chromium 36 upgrade with SSE2 instructions will not execute on Athlon XP 2400+

Posted 08-31-2014 at 05:36 PM by flshope

I have an 11-year-old computer with an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (32 bit) processor and ASUSTeK Computer A7V8X motherboard. The machine has Ubuntu 12.04 installed.

A few weeks ago I did a routine software update using the Update Manager. The update was to move to Chromium 36 from 34 (there was no version 35 under Ubuntu). Suddenly, Chromium would no longer run, or even start on this machine, though Chromium 36 is working OK on two other newer Ubuntu machines. When executed from the command...

First thing to do in an emergency: Nothing!

Posted 11-28-2013 at 10:33 PM by flshope

A few days ago I had a heart-stopping moment on my main linux box running Ubuntu 12.04. I had just deleted two links from my desktop when suddenly I discovered that none of the remaining links on the desktop were working. Worse, clicking on any one of them them produced an error box saying the linked file no longer existed. I actually broke out in a sweat. All of these links are to files on a second internal hard disk where I keep my own data files, as opposed to the files for the OS and the various...
