A question answered.

Posted 11-02-2009 at 05:16 AM by rich_c

Well, ever since I first heard of Hannah Montana Linux, I wondered if there was any mileage in themed remasters.

In order to get some idea myself, I remastered PCLinuxOS Zen Mini with some cosmetic changes for a dog owner forum. Generally not very tech oriented people at all...

I tried to provide as much easily accessible information as I could, including info for using Live CDs etc. but the underwhelming response I got was it was still all too much for them to understand...

So, the answer to my question has to be: Themed remasters don't seem to be an awfully useful Linux advocacy tool. Still, at least I got a bit of experience with remastering and in configuring Gnome. It may come in handy for providing one off remasters for a user's specific needs if that scenario ever arises.

I do have a couple of potential leads on the 'selling' Linux to the uninitiated front that might turn out to be worth mentioning here. For the moment, I'll just keep on making sure people are at least aware of the existence of Linux...

Have you ever used Puppy Linux? It is the best small distro around for me: does networking, both wired and wireless, connects with tel. modem, printing (i.e. networked printing as well as the direct connect), does the multimedia stuff I need, and the tools are easy to use. I've introduced two people recently who are NOT computer people to Puppy, and they are doing what they need to do and liking it.

Take a look! It might be the one you're looking for to remaster.
