Ten challenges to Windows users.

I just read a piece on /. about Microsoft offering a course to BestBuy (U.S. consumer electronics store.) employees that by all accounts amounts to anti Linux FUD! I feel an appropriate response would be to challenge Windows users to do some things I do without fear of repercussions and/or with relative ease, but on their platform of choice... Here goes!
1. Browse the internet with no anti virus running. Firewall optional.
2. Give (Teenage) users permission to install and try software.
3. Set up a home/small network allowing remote access to applications running on other machines, share printers and files and administer other machines. Advanced option, do some of these tasks over the internet.
4. Perform an install and have the system workable without the need to download/install third party drivers.
5. Set up a system with a Pentium II (Or equivalent) processor and around 256mb of RAM with an operating system version released this year.
6. Use the install CD/DVD/USB stick to repair/recover your system AND use it to do the same on other machines.
7. Set up a system to have a choice to boot up an alternative OS.
8. Go to the official website and request an application be made available to install through the centralised method of adding/removing programs, for free!
9. Start working immediately the system has logged in to the desktop without performance being noticeable degraded by background services starting.
10. On the system mentioned in point 7, have shared data available regardless of which operating system is running.
Well, there’s ten challenges to be going on with. Some may require a bit of research and thought with any system. I can honestly say I can achieve all of them with GNU/Linux. Good luck…

Reading comments on other blogs about this propaganda/training push it would seem to me and some others that underlying it all is a need for MS and their associated retail outlets to not only continue selling Windows, but to keep pushing out associated sales like A/V software & customers returning to get their poor performance issues 'fixed' a few months after the initial sale.
This especially makes sense when you consider that some Linux advocates have met with a pretty hostile response from people who have a vested interest in a continuing supply of Windows machines to fix...Posted 09-09-2009 at 11:32 AM by rich_c
