sharing the cpu

Posted 10-17-2011 at 08:57 AM by caieng

Today's post was supposed to be a comparison, using the internet radio station benchmark test, previously described on this forum, of two new distributions: Lubuntu and Xubuntu.

However, in running the tests during the past week, I discovered something unexpected.

Windows XP and Linux have very different methods of assigning weight to particular tasks.

At first, I had thought that XP was faster than Linux, as I have previously written here, but now,...

LXDE: four distributions compared

Posted 08-31-2011 at 09:30 AM by caieng

What is the purpose of LXDE?

In my opinion, LXDE is intended as a light desktop environment, by which one means, an operating system requiring fewer resources, than are required by more typical environments: KDE and Gnome.

One would think, then, that LXDE ought to perform reasonably well, on a standardized test, performing an activity for which older, less powerful hardware is well suited.

Posted 06-29-2011 at 08:30 AM by caieng

07 March 2011

Despite numerous improvements in Linux, during the past decade, it consistently underperforms products by Microsoft (M$). This distinction may be blurred in newer computers, but on older machines, Linux dependably performs routine tasks more slowly than M$ software.

In some settings, however, this relative lethargy is not a significant handicap. One such application, using older computers, with Linux, where perceived diminution in responsiveness...

Change in the testing Algorithm

Posted 03-02-2011 at 08:17 AM by caieng

02 March 2011

A long overdue change has been made in the process of evaluating Linux distributions. The main reason for making the change is the obvious deficiency in the previous testing method. Do we turn off the radio, every time we wish to change a station?

The central web site I use for testing is Mike's Classical Music, found here:
http://www.listenlive.eu/classical.html

There are three different non-proprietary formats employed by sites...
