My Linux "History"........

Hi There!

Let me tell you MY story about my introduction to linux. It was about 20 years ago and the local computer clubs, WIN, MAC, LINUX and COMMADORE. Well, the Mac and Commadore group didn't show up at the ComputerSheaux. There were plenty of vendors for both WIN and the local SBLUG group was there doing demo's of their software. I really didn't care for WIN with it's BSOD in Win 3.1 and DOS didn't have enough features. I asked one of the high school guys about linux and he proceeded to demonstrate it through the command prompt. Well, being an old DOS 6.22 man, I was hooked. He gave me a copy of RED HAT 3.? and I took it home. I tried setting it up on an old 386 I had. It would not install.

I called Chris and we set up a Saturday afternoon that he could install it. I was over joyed. Well, something was wrong with the 'copy' so he put Caldera 2.4 on it and it took off, LOL! He suggested I get a "book" to learn linux, but never told me the name. I got one from O'Reiley, but I wasn't sure as to what I really needed. It had tons of definitions, but I didn't understand a one of them. When I asked, the guys in the SBLUG (Shreveport-Bossier Linux Users Group), they told me to , "LQ^QK it up in the Book!" Well, if you don't know what your looking for, how you gonna find it?

A lot of guys KNEW the answer, but would not even guide me in the general direction of where to look.

This has gone on with different linux groups all over the U.S. and I just gave the HELL up.

Well, I reconsidered my judgement and bought an old Asus P5-LD2?? with 2 gigs of Ram. I've had offers to come help me put the board in a tower case and hook up all the periferials, but no one ever shows up, even with the promise of steaks and beer or coffee & doughnuts,

I was wanting to run a version of linux that would allow me to run Amateur radio programs...digital, morse code, log my contacts, control my radio, etc. But, so far, no 'volunteers' for that either.

I've had some medical problems with my liver that affects my brain and I have trouble 'remembering' things. I used to be a computer 'whiz', now all I can do is take a whiz, LOL!

So, for me, this "Journey" is hopeless. My only solution is to give up, live with old, crappy WIN and have a nervous breakdown.

GOD BLESS,
Warmest Regards,
Donald J. "Buck" Saunders/KA5LQJ
