This thread is for tracking the development of the 4MLinux 28 series.
4MLinux 28.0 Core BETA released.
This is a core system (only about 10 MB in size) for the 4MLinux 28 series. The system includes: the Linux kernel 4.14.80, GNU C Library 2.28, and BusyBox 1.29.3. The 4MLinux 27 series uses GNU Compiler Collection 8.2.0 to compile programs designed for the i686 architecture.
Despite its extremely small size, 4MLinux Core supports all possible boot options: BIOS with 32-bit CPU, BIOS with 64-bit CPU, UEFI with 32-bit firmware, and UEFI with 64-bit firmware.
4MLinux 28.0 BETA is ready for testing. Basically, at this stage of development, 4MLinux BETA has the same features as 4MLinux STABLE, but it provides a huge number of updated packages.
Road map:
December 2018 -> BETA
March 2019 -> STABLE
June 2019 -> OLD STABLE
September 2019 -> EOL
Antivirus Live CD is an official 4MLinux fork including the ClamAV scanner. It's designed for users who need a lightweight live CD, which will help them to protect their computers against viruses. The latest version 28.0-0.101.1 is based on 4MLinux 28.0 BETA and ClamAV 0.101.1.
BakAndImgCD is an official 4MLinux fork, which has been designed to perform the following two tasks: data backup and disk imaging. The 4MLinux Backup Scripts make use of FSArchiver, GNU ddrescue, Partclone, Partimage, rsync, and other utilities. The output files (archives and images) can be optionally compressed and sent to a remote sever (using Ethernet, WiFi, PPP or PPPoE). This release is based on the 4MLinux Backup Scripts 28.0.
This is a major release based on the 4MLinux Server 28.0, meaning that the components of the LAMP server are now: Linux 4.19.19, Apache 2.4.38, MariaDB 10.3.12, and PHP (both 5.6.40 and 7.2.15).
You can update your TheSSS by executing the "zk update" command (fully automatic process).
The status of the 4MLinux 28.0 series has been changed to STABLE. Edit your documents with LibreOffice 6.2.1.2 and GNOME Office (AbiWord 3.0.2, GIMP 2.10.8, Gnumeric 1.12.43), share your files using DropBox 66.4.84, surf the Internet with Firefox 65.0.2 and Chromium 72.0.3626.53, stay in touch with your friends via Thunderbird 60.5.2 and Skype for Web, enjoy your music collection with Audacious 3.10.1, watch your favorite videos with VLC 3.0.6 and mpv 0.29.0, play games powered by Mesa 18.2.0 and Wine 4.1. You can also setup the 4MLinux LAMP Server (Linux 4.19.19, Apache 2.4.38, MariaDB 10.3.12, PHP 5.6.40 and PHP 7.2.15). Perl 5.28.0, Python 2.7.15, and Python 3.7.0 are also available.
As always, the new major release has some new features: improved installation script (new disk formatting options have been added), much more firmware available (for network devices, sound cards and scanners), added support for reading bar codes (via ZBar), better support for Debian and Fedora packages (via Midnight Commander and Engrampa), new web browser (NetSurf) as well as new download manager (Gwget). Additionally, Electrum is now available as a downloadable extension (both Bitcoin and Lite Coin wallets are supported by 4MLinux).
This is a minor (point) release based on the 4MLinux Server 28.1, meaning that the components of the LAMP server are now: Linux 4.19.28, Apache 2.4.38, MariaDB 10.3.13, and PHP (both 5.6.40 and 7.2.16).

Was just wondering if the 4m linux kernel can be compiled using the live environment/install?
If so, how did others make their own distro from 4m linux base? Is there a pkg manager or pkgs are compiled from source, etc?
thanks!

Hi,
Development packages are not available out of the box. You can find them on the 4MLinux installation CD (in the "devel" directory) and online. If you have more questions on this subject, please start a new thread.
