Vectorlinux all the way. It's fast, it's easy, and if you want to finetune it, you have good old slacky under the hood.

why you tweak the kernel then add way to much stuff to it.debian is a linux system that is used on many distros. or you can build your own debian distro.
However Debian was on the list and my vote went to it

Funny how some ask to add some odd, uncommon distribution to the list that noone ever heard (or cared) about, even though they use something else on their profiles. Oh well...

I think Ubuntu will win this one and it is very well deserved if it does

Apart from the usual distro - hopping, I'll probably always use Debian. Actually I like F8, I didn't like F4-7. Still the weakest point is yum. I know that Solaris is not Linux, but I was quite surprised with S10's default GUI.

Gentoo because its the only distro where the only problem (that I haven't caused myself) is the wait for stuff to compile.

While I never tried Ubuntu (IMHO an icky Debian hack job from looking at the code) nor SUSE (IMHO only suitable for really fast machines), I have to disagree with your statement about Debian not being a distro.

By your definition RedHat and Slackware aren't distros either.

While there wasn't a clear idea of what a Linux distro was in 1993 when Debian was born, it was precisely this desire that led Ian and Debra Murdoch to create Debian. Before the corporate money-making machine found a market for it and before the press could spin it out of whack, Debian laid down a cohesive framework for a truly free and open operating system.

Debian is much more than a simple distro, which you may have been vaguely alluding to. It is an entire non-commercial community, creating freely, without any financial incentive whatsoever. One needn't wonder why they aren't in the news a lot or listed in the "server market" watches. They aren't "news" and they don't have a "market" precisely because they don't play the peanut and shell games. They aren't jockeying for a position on some chart or better "market share" to gain more ad revenue or service contracts. But they most certainly ARE a GNU/Linux distro , and the second oldest still in existence I might add.

This is a silent revolution, with no need for whistles and bells because it's just plain common sense and common knowledge combined.

I vote for Zenwalk!
Zenwalk is light, fast, up to date, and rock solid stable. Zenwalk is proof that linux can be beginner friendly without being big and bloated like some of the more popular distros. It is only about a 450mb download too.

1. Missing Wolvix, Wolvix, Wolvix!!! (Great installer, great Slackware 11 derivative with added polish and extra packages.)

2. Missing "CentOS, Scientific Linux, StartCom Linux AS or other RHEL clones".

3. Missing Frugalware, quite a complete distro too!

My top picks would be Debian and Arch. is one of the original Linux distributions along with Slackware. And Arch Linux is an awesome Linux distribution.

For the ones missing sidux or sabayon, just pick debian or gentoo respectively as they are the fathers of those distributions.

Fedora, becuase Linux is written in C and like C even if it doesn't do everything perfectly at least you can count on it to do everything.
