XMMS :D

raouls 01-02-2005 04:49 AM

i've been a hardcore xmms fan for a few years, but when i took a look at amaroK, i had to change my mind... they still need some improvements, and their gui needs to look spiffier (at this stage, even xmms is spiffier), but their library management is awesome...

xmms

I voted for XMMS but I usually use Totem movie player to listen to my music.

amaroK!

amaroK has all the best features of any Linux media player. First it's a KDE application, so it can easily be controlled by scripts via DCOP. It supports multiple backends for playback, so the choice is yours. amaroK features a database that is compiled on the fly to give you statistics about listening habits, and can even suggest other music to listen to.

For current users, the version 1.2 is just around the corner, and here are some of the new features to look for.

Upgraded SQLite.
Song lyrics display in the Context Browser.
Intelligent resize for playlist columns.
Suggested songs in the Context Browser (using audioscrobbler).
10 band graphic equalizer (GStreamer and xine engines)
Configurable OSD text display.
MySql database support.
Full Audioscrobbler support, including track submission.
New FlatVIew in the Collection Browser.
Enhanced DCOP functionality.
Konqueror sidebar (context browser and play controls inside konqueror)
Speed enhancements for loading large playlists.
Context browser supports CSS styling (themeable).
Album cover fetching improvements.
Support for embedded ID3v2 cover images.
KDELIRC profile for remote controls.
Context Browser caches tab contents for faster tab switching.
And rumor has it that iPod support works great and is improving. :)

I voted for XMMS but it is getting hard to make a distinction between audio and video players. I use XMMS to play videos and I use mplayer to play music (some time).

I just wish I could get plugins for FireFox that would let me play SBC Yahoo video and audio. SBC is so in bed with Microsoft it just isn't funny.

I love xmms because it's really small and fast (primarily why I don't use amaroK), however, it's far too old and now BMP has surpassed it. Any xmms fan should really take a look at BMP. It's backward compatible with skins and most plugins and is actually being developed.

Muine

I'd like to suggest Muine!

simeandrews 01-03-2005 02:11 PM

Why no Muine?

denials 01-03-2005 07:19 PM

Would have been Juk, but I recompiled KDE without arts support and could only get amarok to work through the gstreamer framework...

hutuworm 01-03-2005 08:21 PM

Why no Mplayer?
