I don't understand what you mean. Is there something wrong with using SSH? If they're on the same network, essentially they're connected.
You could use your lappy as a console of sorts and connect to the BSD machine, but no point if you have SSH.
What kind of access are you trying to get?

Well if you have ssh and are looking for further things to try you could play around with VNC or X forwarding for running gui programs on the BSD machine from your laptop

are you sure of your network ?
Can you ping each other ?
Have you SSh installed, and if yes the tow versions are identicals?
What type of acces you need ? managing the box ? file transfert ? control it ? share resources ? Authentification ?
many usages, many kinds of connect !

Yes! Phil. That would be fun. I vaguely had that in mind, but I didn't know it was possible. Like I said, I have ssh working. Where do I need to look to learn how to do VNC and /or xforwarding?
