xorgconfig help requested

i am having to re-install a *nix system and apparently my notes got toasted at least on one of the pages.

i am trying to get kde setup but it keeps telling me that

it cannot open display ' '
cannot connect to X server (repeats over and over)

i jave run xorgconfig and the xorg.conf file is in my /etc/ folder. i have also created .xinitrc and .xsession in my home directory.

i know i am missing a step or two but just can't figure out the smearing...

this is a dell laptop so i had to get lcd info and graphics card. startx works but the screen really ugly and the mouse works.

thanks for any help!

buddy
