I could use a little help with my xorg.conf file. I got FBSD all installed ok, and gdm/GNOME working. Color depth seems to be ok at 24, but it's only giving me a 640x480 resolution.
I edited my /etc/X11/xorg.conf to go for a Depth of 24, and "1024x768", but it's almost like Xorg is completely ignoring it.
I'm not at that machine right now so I can't post the contents, but if somebody could give me a copy of their xorg.conf file, maybe I can glean something from that. I went through the handbook, followed all of the steps, etc., and really, why it's not working isn't making any sense unless it's some kind of typo or in the wrong place or something.
I also need to add in ZAxisMapping "4 5", because I have a ms intellimouse with a wheel (2 buttons plus clickable scroll wheel). If someone has the entry for that so I can see what it's supposed to read, I'd appreciate it.
Then it's on to getting sound to work. But first I'm worried over the screen and mouse. Then I'll try to figure out what what I need to install for sound, and how to configure that.
If you're not able to get better resolution out of the card, it's probably because the driver tells X that it can't go that high. Check the documentation for the driver that your video card is using as well as the X error log.
For the mouse, either man xorg.conf or read one of the bazillion conf files that google will find for you
Adding the monitor parameters (vert and hor refresh rates) and zaxis mapping, while I had it open, solved the X and mouse issues, no problem.
Got the sound working too...I had to compile a new kernel to get it to see my sound card. Coming from linux, and never having had a successful kernel compile (not that I've tried in a good while, and that was under Red Hat...go figure), I was pleasantly surprised at how simple the config file is (yeah, it's overwhelming at first, but then you realize it's just a list of things to either leave in or take out), and how easily it compiled (in about an hour, with no errors) and installed. Voila, there it was, sound. So I got that working too.
