Sound on FreeBSD/GNOME

Hi, I recently installed FreeBSD on my laptop with GNOME as my window manager. Whenever GNOME starts up I get an error message saying "Couldn't open mixer device /dev/sound/mixer" there is no device /dev/sound/mixer on my system so I tried to make a link to /dev/mixer0, which is the only mixer device on my system, at /dev/sound/mixer but is still doesn't seem to work. Does anybody know what the problem is?

One more thing I forgot to mention, I don't think it's a hardware problem because I can hear the terminal bell. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you recompiled the kernel with soundcard support added?

#try adding
device pcm # soundblaster compatable support.
#to the kernel

cd /usr/src
make buildkernel KERNCONF=YOURKERN
make installkernel KERNCONF=YOURKERN
reboot
