Angry How to get a USB mouse to work in FreeBSD?

I installed FreeBSD yesterday. I have been trying to get my USB mouse detected. While following an online howto I realise that my MAKEDEV script is missing. Why so? and how can I work around this?

edit: I need help getting my USB mouse and possibly my controller detected by FreeBSD.. I am new to FreeBSD..

Are you running 5.2.1 or 4.x? Version 5 and above does not have a MAKEDEV script.

It uses a devfs to find devices and create the nodes.

darn.. yes i am using 5.2.1 .. that would explain it.. so right now FreeBSD does not detect my mouse..

I recompiled the kernel to no avail.. it looks for an OHCI device where as I have an UHCI.. I use a microsoft intellimouse (usb).. How can I get it to work?

What do you have for `ls -l /dev/u*` ?

And what about dmesg (the whole thing)? That would be the first place to start.

dmesg output for usb
usb0: OHCI version 1.0 legacy support
usb0: <OHCI (generic) USB controller on ohci0
usb0: SMM does not respond, resetting

the same output for usb1 as well..

what bothers me is that I know that it should be UHCI since that's what I used on linux. My mother board has an nVidia chipset.

I am assuming that you don't see any message at all when you unplug and then replug the mouse in... my mouse tends to be funny... but I can see it in the dmesg and everything.

We could always try to create the node anyway.

The major number for my mouse is 111 and the minor is 0... but I seriously doubt that will work. Devfs is very good at autofinding hardware it supports.
