FTp server problem

I am running FreeBSD ver 5.1 and I am having trouble with the defult FTP server. After I log in and type the command ls or any command I get this,

200 Port Comand Successful
150 Opening ASCII Mode data connection for 'filelist'

It will sit there for a while and finally say disconnected by remote server. I have tried the wu_ftp server and have the same problem. I am unable to connect with Dreamweaver to upload any of my web pages. Has anyone run into this?

are you using active or passive mode?

looks like an unsupportted mode.

Sounds like the firewall is blocking the traffic. What sort of firewall(s) is(are) in between you and the box you're FTP'ing to?

Edit: To be more clear, FTP uses two channels, the command channel over port 21, and a data channel which can be over any number of ports. Generally people only configure their firewall for port 21 and it will cause exactly the problem you're having.
