Is it halting at sshd or sendmail? Mine seems to be halting right after sshd but I found out it is sendmail that's holding it up. Either I press cntl-C or wait about 10 mins for it to continue.
I haven't tried using ssh yet, but will and let you know what happens.
What kind of machine? The first time sshd starts it needs to generate host keys. This is a computationally intensive process that can take quite some time on older hardware.
Check your DNS settings. The behavior that both of you describe is almost always caused by the machine not being able to gethostbyname(3) on itself. Make sure your hosts file is set up correctly, and that your machine is able to contact the DNS servers you have configured.
