note that the kernel used in Zenwalk doesn't need any initrd (huge kernel).

That is normally true for an internal drive, sometimes on an external drive an initrd is needed with the huge kernel to make things happen.
If you can get by without one great, threw that in there for general information.

True, indeed usb storage modules are needed in this particular case. So is the initrd.

It would technically be possible to build a kernel with inline usb storage, but these modules are numerous, and I want to keep the stock Slack kernel.

There was a typo in my post 13, should have been
