Just installed ubuntu x86_64 and seemed to go through its instillation without a hitch.
Once it rebooted and began to unpack everything and then get ready to start the X server it comes up with a blue screen and an error saying that no devices were detected and no screens were found. It then gives you an option of detailed error output from X server. It also outputs this to a file xlog.0.log which is shown below.
I just can't get it to boot into X server even with the Live distro of unbuntu. On the other hand I can boot into the X server of Slax: Kill Bill Ed (LiveCD) and the graphics are ok and appear to work. I have also attached the Xorg.cong file from the Slax distro incase that is of any help?
This is the xlog File:

# NOTE: This is a NEW IMPROVED version of XF86Config-fbdev that uses the vesa
# driver instead of the fbdev driver. Thanks to Kenneth Fanyo who pointed
# this out to me. :)
# This XF86Config file is designed for use with the VESA framebuffer.
# This generic interface should work with nearly all video cards
# (although not every card will support every resolution).
# With the new driver, it should no longer be required to have frame buffer
# support in the kernel, or to run it on the console.
#
# Enjoy! :)

Forgot to add my computer specs:
AMD64 3200+
1024MB Crucial Ram
ATI Radeon X800XL 256Mb
Managed to find a temprorary solution to the problem on another forum.
By running :
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and then chosing the vesa driver over the ati one now I am able to boot into Ubuntu and use it as normal.
I haven't been able to find a way off installing the correct ati drivers though which could get annoying. Is it advisable to use the vesa driver as I have heard it is un accelerated.
Hi perl,
I installed ubuntu latest release yesterday and apparently have the same problem with X as you.
Did you in the meantime find any solution apart from using the vesa-drivers, which, to my knowledge don't support 64bit. I thought about installing ati-drivers with the ati-installer as reported in http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...cle&artid=212.
But on the ati homepage they also say 64 is not supported.
Anyway, I would be grateful for any hints you could make about this issue.
Thanx a lot.
