Bargain desktop/server: Ubuntu+WindowMaker
Laptop: Ubuntu+KDE+WindoMaker
Old PC: Ubuntu+KDE+WindowMaker (Planned)

My laptop has never been so responsive, There are still some a/v problems and I haven't had time to try our the wireless card or playing dvds, but I like it a lot.

I've always wanted to have one base distribution for all of my machines. Ubuntu is the first one that has come along that I knew I would want to try to do this with. I will still try other distros, I leave room for more. If each machine performs their desired functions with Ubuntu as the base distro, I think maintaining them will be so much easier.

I use Kubuntu. mostly because its my first Linux system that I have ever used (on MY PC, anyway)and because a friend referred me to it.

i like the kde programs better (ie. kopete, k3b, konqueror...yes, i realize they can be run in gnome too, i'm just saying...) also, my pc doesn't have a whole lot of ram (128MB), and maybe i'm delusional, but kde seems way faster than gnome.

Ubuntu & Gnome here. I used to like KDE when I had Mandrake, but I got burnt out on it.

I prefer Ubuntu + KDE. At first I liked using Gnome but then I tryed KDE and it blew me away. I also like using Konqueror alot more than Natilus for file management.

Ubuntu + E17 packages from eLive.

Ubuntu. Ever since I started using Linux I've been told that I should feel more comfortable in KDE because it's more like the windows desktop (and me being a windows user for a long time), but I have always been more comfortable in Gnome.

I <3 the gnome.

Penguin of Wonder 05-15-2006 10:29 AM

You know I've always felt the same way. Everyone says KDE is more windows like, but Gnome always felt more comfortable to me after switching from a windows enviroment.

People who says KDE is "more Windows-like" usually have nothing to back it up with except that by default Gnome has two panels (one on the top and one on the bottom) in Ubuntu (not for every distribution) and KDE has one on the bottom ("like Windows").

Since both are customizable (in fact, KDE can mimic Mac's "place the application menu within the top toolbar" behavior), it really doesn't matter where the toolbar placement is.

Both KDE and Gnome have more in common with Windows than either has in common with Mac. They both have the equivalent of a Start Menu (one that lists all the applications, unlike the Apple menu). They both have window lists (instead of the Dock and Expose). Gnome defaults to double-click, which is more Windows-like than KDE's default single-click.

In the end, KDE and Gnome are their own thing. The only thing "Windows-like" is XPDE.

just an update to my situation.. I switched to gnome a few months back and couldn't be happier. kde had some annoying bugs, and I like how gnome looks anyways.

Lordandmaker 05-16-2006 11:49 AM

Kubuntu + Fluxbox and most of Gnome.

I'm not entirely sure how i managed it, or why, but it seems happy.

Gnome I find restrictive. You cant customize it as much as you can KDE..... well ok, yes you can but it's not as easy todo.
I've always found KDE much easier to use and the applications more centralised (if that's the right word for it). Apps in Gnome seem a bit mix-and-match.

Ubuntu 6.06 for me. I like Gnome as it has a more professional look

PostPCMan 07-04-2006 08:57 AM

Ubuntu. I used to use SuSE 9.3 with KDE. I've just gone to ubuntu 6.06 in the last week, and messing with the windows mgr. was the lowest priority on my list, so I just went with the default. This was my first experience with gnome. It works fine for me, although there are one or two things, like kcron, that I miss. If I get bored, I may try the kde-desktop package. Honestly, at this point I have no preference, since I do most of my real work in a shell anyway.

In general, I wouldn't stress over this at all. Just try either one, and if you're unhappy switch.

BTW, synaptics is GREAT, so if you go KDE, at least load that.
