I used to use KDE exclusively, then I sold my laptop and bought a different one (slightly lower spec to save some cash) and the first thing I noticed is that even with a stripped down bare bones KDE install it runs like a kludge compared to everything else I have used.

So now I use Gnome, it provides a nice balance of features and responsiveness that runs really well on my 256Mb laptop!

i installed them both and i can say i use kde the most but im starting to use gnome 45% of the time cos it is so good, i also will add kde apps run in gnome so if its just apps install kde with everything and dont use kde

Ubuntu.

I haven't used KDE in a long time and am mostly just a Windows convert. So far Gnome has been easy to work with and simply to setup. I've got all the stuff I need, I can make my desktop look pretty cool with have to screw with things like in Fluxbox.

I did like XFCE when I was running Gentoo, but this time around I was looking for an easy to implement system that I didn't need to spend a whole lot of time on setup. Ubuntu had that and I have everything setup and was playing games in cedega within a couple hours of finishing the download.

Actually, Ubuntu+KDE is a good idea, rather than having to burn your own (K)ubuntu CDs. I haven't orderd any of the free cds yet, but I think I will soon. They are also planning to have a DVD with both KDE and GNOME, as both a live and an install disc, and with even more packages from the repositories. They say it will be available soon.

I always used KDE previously, ran Mandrake for a couple of years before trying Ubuntu with KDE installed. After a while I decided to give Gnome a try and I've never looked back, it just seems more stable, I used to get broken links with KDE and programs seeming to stop working properly for (apparently) no reason.
No such problems with Gnome and I even uninstalled KDE completely after a month or so.

Whilst I'm typing, does anyone know how to get Gnome to list thumbnails when attaching/inserting images?
File manager shows thumbnails but i just get a list otherwise.

i use gnome on "breezy" 5.10
my children use kde342 on "hoary" 5.04
my wife uses kde342 on Suse 10

all are working well that is all I'm concerned about
does it work or does it not work

I've been using Gnone with Breezy, but may try Kubuntu, I hear its looking good. I'm much of a gnome person but lately I've started using Ubuntu & SimplyMepis to see which one may be best to have complete newbies try out.

Since January, I've used Mepis the most and I must say, I'm beginning to like KDE 3.5.1 alot. But I still think kde installs too much software and could narrow down some.

I like kde, cant stand gnome for me gnome is slow and childish looking to be honest. Kde is not perfect, Im running 3.5 and it has a few bugs. But in all seriousness ALL linux distros and GUIs have bugs and will crash from time to time. Part of using linux I guess lol

I find myself torn as well. But overall I like the feel of Gnome better. I find themes for Gnome are better than the ones for KDE too. A lot of people don't like Gnome because it's to "windows i.e. microsoft" like, but I think that's a load of BS. If you it works for you, and you like it, use it! If its Windows like, and you like that, then it shouldn't bother you. But don't refuse to use it just because it resembles Windows, that's childish. Overall though I'd have to go with Gnome Only on my system.

(If your reading this and the "Distributions" listed beside my post say Kubuntu, then I'm sorry, I haven't updated that in a long time)

They both allow you to be very productive in a real work situation, so I can't say right now that I favor one over the other. I'm using Kubuntu on my laptop and Ubuntu on my PowerEdge Server. I'm pretty happy with the direction that KDE is going, so in the future I might lean that way.

I'm also WAY happy with how easy both flavors install! Sometimes you just want to install an OS and Window Manager and have it all work. Both flavors were that easy for me. kudos to Mr. Shuttleworth.

I replaced my FC4 with Kubuntu, and preferred the KDE tools, but missed the GNOME layout. However Kubuntu had problems with my DVD writer so I had to go back to FC 4, which I now run as KDE but set up like GNOME with thin top and bottom bars.
I have Ubuntu ready to install on a test partition, and if I can sort out the DVD problem I shall again switch to it, probably using KDE, as Kate in particular is far better suited to my purposes than Gedit. I tried Kate in GNOME but it loads very slowly.
