Is Sophos the best anti-virus software for release 16.04 or is there a more common package?
I did install Sophos and have run some scans manually which came out clean. I am planning on putting it in crontab, is there are preferred command systax for it since it outputs to the terminal? Is Sophos the right product for online purchases, banking, ... etc?
There are some who would argue that you don't need an anti-virus in Linux. I would argue that, for peace of mind, it's not a bad idea and that Sophos is a good anti-virus scanner. I wouldn't suggest any preferred command syntax, just that you ensure, through either logging or redirected output, that you receive a record of any errors/warnings/hits. Also, ensure that you run /opt/sophos-av/bin/savupdate before the scan in order to update the signatures.
Of more importance are probably your browsing habits (the most common route of attack onto a desktop system, although clicking on email attachments is another). Never run your browser as admin and also use a JavaScript blocker (I use Firefox with the uBlock Origin and NoScript addons). Note that if you use NoScript then you will have to create exceptions for your purchases/banking websites so that they are usable.
