The computer is an inspiron 1721 notebook. Specs are 17" widescreen monitor, 120 Gb hard drive, CD/DVD burner, ATI Radeon X1200 series video (128mb shared), 2 Gb ram, SB600 ATI audio card, AMD Turion64 X2 CPU,Broadcom BCM2405 Bluetooth, Broadcom 1390 mini-PCI wireless card, Broadcom ethernet, ‎Ricoh ‎SD Card reader, OmniVision Technologies, Inc. -2640-07.05.16.3 Integrated Webcam.

I have already tried acpi=off and it made it crash upon booting. As you can see from above, Kubuntu recognizes the card and has a driver for it, but nothing seems to make it produce any sound. My volume is all the way up, and it is not muted. The sound works fine in vista (this is dual boot). I looked on the alsa website and I couldn't even find the card listed there. What can I do to fix this?

There is no alsaconf in ubuntu. I tried just to make sure but got a bash when trying to run sudo alsaconf. Is there maybe some other way of installing those modules?

Update: I was just going through the alsa troubleshooting guide and it told me to check conf/asound/cards to see if my card was listed as card number zero. Well it wasn't, and neither was anything else listed there or anywhere in any of the folders or documents in conf/asound. Everything was blank! Could this be my problem? If so, how in the heck do I fix it?

but several suggest that eastg's suggestions in the thread below, worked under Gutsy, wouldn't hurt to try in Hardy. Seems posts 4, 6, 8 are the juicy ones..

Just tried all that stuff, no dice.

I did notice though that /proc/asound is completely empty. It is just a bunch of empty folders and documents. Could that be causing my problem, and if so how do I correct that?

It is an inspiron 1721. I have all the specs listed above in the post.

well you don't have alsaconf because is not installed.
You should install alsa-tools to get alsaconf
from there try to setup your card

I installed that and still no alsa-conf. I have read from several forums that ubuntu takes it out of all their packages. That is really annoying. I wonder if I could just uninstall, get the tar ball, and compile from source. Then I assume I would have alsaconf. I don't know why ubuntu is hating on it so bad.
