Hello,

I'm trying to install OpenSuSE 10.3 on a HP dc7800 PC but when it boots from the DVD everything starts looking good, when it tryes to load the kernel it reaches 99% and the screen goes black and stays in the state forever.. never comes back.
But if I try too install an "SuSE desktop enterprise version" works perfect.


PC details:
HP COMPAQ PC DC7800 SMALL FORM FACTOR INTEL PENTIUM DUAL CORE CPU E2160 1.8GHz


I called HP and they say they haven't tested these PC's with Linux.

Any ideas???

Did you choose KDE or Gnome?

How much ram do you have?

It doesn't even get to that part, I choose installation, then linux kernel starts loading and monitor goes black.

I have 512Mb RAM

Ran memory test and tests passed ok with 0 errors. Test took aprox 1hour and 10 min.

I can't test the media because I doesn't go that far. But the dvd I used is the same one that from which I have installed at least 25 servers. I burned another copy from the same image and I get the same error. and if I try it on other PC models it works.

Because if you came so far suse recognize CPU and the monitor possible even you,re video cart
A other possibility is dvd reader or burner did not work correct it reads from inside to the out side try an other if you have one

I tried an external USB dvd reader and had the same issue.


Any more ideas?

Tried installing using text mode it halts on: ACPI: Assume root bridge [\_SB_.PCI0] bus is 0

Found the following and got me a little further;

I booted with a trial version of SuSE Enterprise Desktop and then I told it to include Add-On Products from separate Media...

I will let you know if it works.

There are 2 possibilities:

1st: check is the rams are set correctly, dont ask me why win read them while suse doesn't, I asked myself with no ans. If you have more than one ram remove it then let one do the installation, if its possible change the memory then try do your installation.

2nd: If you are using pci-e card to connect your lovely display go back to the legend with the onboard vga (Don't worry about the attached card, once you done with the installation you can load the drivers and change back to the pci card)

Both methods works for me in different occassions, check out and tell us which one work out.

Will try that because I was able to install SuSE 10.3 with a fresh Downloaded DVD from OpenSuse.org using it's safe settings but got many errors during the installation.
It's working now but still I don't know if all the errors I got will impact the operations for these PC's are going into a production environment..

My objective is to install XEN and run XP virtually.


If anyone has more ideas they are welcome.

I don't know a lot about xen but Virtual Box always works great for me. Try it.

Tried using Virtual box but I get an error:
VirtualBox kernel driver not installed. The vboxdrv kernel module was either not loaded or /dev/vboxdrv was not created for some reason. Re-setuup the kernel module by executing "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup" as root.

I've been playing around with VirtualBox lately and I've seen this error. And there's usually another one after you solve the one for the kernel module. For me this didn't happen with openSUSE but it happened with other os's.

To load the module (assuming it's available):

Open a terminal and become root. Type 'modprobe vboxdrv' (no quotes)
It should return to the next line with a blank prompt. To check if it loaded type 'lsmod' It should be the first module in the list. This should also create /dev/vboxdrv. Try and start openSUSE from VB again.

If you get an error that you don't have permissions for /dev/vboxdrv, you can solve that using the File Manager-Super User mode. (Applications > System > File Manager > Super User Mode)

Go to the /dev directory and find the /dev/vboxdrv icon and right click it. Click the permissions tab and change user from root to your user name. Click ok.

Should work then.
