Nope - nothing is making any noise - cd players, realplayer, kaffeine, all the kids favorite web-sites - all completely silent - the windows show that the streams are playing, i.e. moving through the tracks.(just booted Puppy - sound working fine, so it's not a hardware problem)

Check the mixer options (bottom right side of the desktop) to make sure that they are not set to mute.

You could also try updating alsa at:-

suddenly all works - is this because I booted Puppy in between times? That's all I've done, all volumes were at highish levels in Suse - I'm very confused!!

I'm glad you got it fixed but here's a suggestion.

Everything works fine almost straight out of the box on 10.3

Whilst not the answer to your post it might be simpler just to go for 10.3 -- loads of stuff has been updated and Software installation is now a breeze compared with 10.1 and 10.2.

I liked version 10.0 but had real problems with 10.1 and 10.2.

I've got SLED 10 on a desktop which I'll probably upgrade but 10.3 has worked (with sound) first time on several different laptops (both X_64 and X_32 bit versions). On a dual core processor choose the 64 bit version - it's nice and snappy.

DVD playing is great as well -- I had horrendous problems with WinDVD and VISTA -- well rid of them both.

When installing libxine1 ignore some of the conflicts - and you don't need to uninstall anything. You need LIBDVDCSS as well (use videolan and pacman sites - these can be added automatically by the software update process on 10.3

Cheers

-K
