SU to local user receiving two additional password prompts

SLES 10.4

After logging in via SSH, when SU to a local user I am getting a total of three password prompts. I can switch user ok after putting in the password three times. I've checked logs and looked over PAM modules trying a few different things, but have had no luck resolving.

Here's an example of the issue:

Code:
admin@expdev01's password:
Last login: Tue May 8 9:37:45 2013 from admin.exp.com
admin@expdev01:~> su - expuser
Password:
Password:
LDAP Password:
expuser@expdev01:~>
Any ideas?

not sure what is the reason but maybe showing nsswitch.conf and related PAM config files could help
