rug and zypper advice needed
I'm going to do a opensuse install soon and hope to get farther with it then I did with the last install years ago. I'm looking to do everyting in command line with packages and updates. I have read all the guides on rug/zypper that I could find but I still don't have an idea of why suse has more than one Package Manager so any clues will help.

mike@continuity7:~$ which rug
which: no rug in (/home/mike/bin:/home/mike/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/home/mike/apps/bin)

Forget about rug. I have never encountered rug on openSUSE. It seems to be something to do with ZENworks and can be used on SUSE Linux Enterprise. I use SUSE Linux Enterprise and have never encountered rug. (http://www.novell.com/documentation/...a/b8q6bkh.html SUSE Linux Enterprise used to be a Novell product, it's now a SUSE product, Novell having become part of the The Attachmate Group and SUSE spun off as a separate business unit. The branding can still be a little confusing.)

Actually rug is legacy which is still used whether it is 9.x, below or higher. Zypper is newer and thus to keep legacy and newer package manager you find both rug and zypper on SuSE. I hope that answers your query.
Credit goes to the poster who answered the query in the link mentioned above
Yes it has something to do with Zenworks basically with zmd (Zenworks Managed Devices). If you want to think in Red Hat context think of zmd as satellite server and rug to be yum (yum is nothing but a python script in the backend which performs the query like rug does)

Thanks for the info.
Well I wanted to do command line only use unless it was for non-critical use. I just got mageia 4 to work but have dicovered that draksnapshot is inoperative and there is no history or rollback capabilities with urpmi so I guess it is time for a new distro. All of mageia's media applications and web applications work great though.
I tried suse in the past but with gnome2 is was a resource slob but with xfce and the multi package manager tools it looks like it will be the perfect fit. Yum is even a listed supported application. I would have perfered fedora again but I always have problems with it suspending ,always while other distros don't have this cronic issue.
Can anyone lend any advice links or terms to seach that will aid in getting info on having more than one Package Manager on open suse?

Here's info about zypper in openSUSE. http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Zypper
We've established rug is irrelevant so not sure why your are still talking about multiple package managers. Unless you're thinking of the hitherto unmentioned YaST which has a module for package management, but it isn't command line.
