Random freezes requiring power cycle, Win7 unaffected
I5-650 / 1156 pins, 4GB ram, H55 mimi-itx mobo
Win 7 seems to like this hardware, it rarely freezes (but it does, sometimes) but opensuse 12.3 and now 13.1 cannot run more than a couple of hours without freezing. All events require a hard power cycle. The linux runtime is random from a few minutes to an hour or two. It has run overnight.
I thought it might be related to the poor Intel graphics driver, so put in an Nvidia pci-e card with no change to problem.
CPU runs about 45C.
I have run memory diags with no probs.
Logs have not been much help. I'm open to suggestions.
Linux is not Microsoft. Pal's, timers, gates and yes drivers are all used differently. Unless this system was factory tested on Opensuse you can't be sure it will work.
Sometimes you may have to set bios settings slower for ram and even processor. Good quality parts always helps.
Well, DUH!!! But Win7 IS an operating system that runs on the hardware, so one can assume that most of the pieces are utilized, albeit not quite in exactly the same way or with the same stress.

True

Mobo is ECS H55H-1 and cpu is Intel I5-650. It seemed to be quality at the time.
I'm not trying to argue. I'm trying to get a handle on what could be causing the problem. I have ruled out cpu temp, the memory passes extended tests, the video driver isn't the problem. I will find another power supply on the off chance that there could be some voltage dropouts on current peaks which wouldn't show up in normal testing. The mini-itx form factor doesn't lend itself to high output supplies, so there could be some pulse stability issues. It has been my experience that most puter probs are cables, connectors, heat and power, in that order. If I solve it I'll report back.
