Problem with WinTV DVB TV card in Suse 10.0

I installed a WinTV DVB tv card and the first time I booted into Suse 10.0, it worked beautifully in xawtv4. But when I rebooted, it had stopped working and the only way I can get it to work again is to delete it in Yast, reboot and re-configure (in Yast).

I suspect that the necessary modules are not being loaded. Can anybody explain in words of one syllable how I do it?

Linux does a good job of recognizing TV cards but the tuners on those cards are another matter. Even the same model of TV card will use different tuners over time. You can identify your tuner by looking at the TV card -- its the large package on the card. You may have to remove the card vendors sticker from the tuner to see which it is. Even though Ya ST appears to have configured the card, you should still change/edit the configuration. After selecting the same model of card SuSE found you'll have the opportunity to select the tuner model by name.

Thank you for your reply Fragos. However, I have discovered that the tv card does work if I do NOT congfigure it in Yast each time I boot. I am puzzled but if it works, I am happy. By the way, the only name under the label on the tuner is Thomson (stamped on the metal).

You should only have to configure it once and then it should work for every boot. I'm not familiar with that brand of tuner but the name should help you narrow down the number of possible choices. Being in the UK you're also PAL and not NTSC. Since now it consistently works, perhaps its best to leave that sleeping dog alone. If you do a dmesg in a terminal window, with a little hunting you will find the tuner number Linux uses and perhaps the full model name of the tuner. Save it for future reference.

Hello Fragos. Thanks for your tip about dmesg. The tuner is by Thomson (a French company). Strangely my Suse 9.3 installaton gave me more info than the Suse 10.0. Maybe one day I will know enough to do my own troubleshooting. Thanks again.
