Yea i was really thinking on switching to Ubuntu, some people told me to stick with suse but i think im going to b leaving it to try something that different which ive been recommended to for less buggy. check this version out http://www.ubuntustudio.com/ i am a music producer nd i found getting a audio sequencer onto linux was hard because it told me i mite have to adjust my kernel, so this baisically saves me the trouble, nd it looks really sexy. As far as ubuntu goes. what happens with RAID, i read something that theres a special disk nd theres no graphic install or something which is a no no for me. Mint looked good to i saw it one time, ne ways keep the posts coming on opinions on this
That Ubuntu studio looks really cool! I want it.
Hey with Ubuntu you have to learn a few more things. Such as how to edit the grub menu, there is no SaX2 tool for dual monitors. But I tell you what; apt-get is awesome. Your system and programs are allways current with it. Linux Mint is speedy! SuSE Yast has too many functions for me (disorganized I feel)! I think they should break Yast down into smaller faster components. BTW now I'm considering Saybayon Linux http://www.sabayonlinux.org
Please stick to the thread subject. You might want to start another thread if you want to compare/contrast the differences between Suse/Ubuntu/insert-name-of-distro. Not trying to be an a**hole, just wanting to make sure the thread stays true to original post subject.
To the original post, I've found that with the suggested tweaks, openSuSE 10.2, with the latest NVIDIA drivers and beryl-snapshot, works quite well. I still can't start beryl when my desktop starts but I can click on beryl-manager and then select "Reload Window Manager" and, after a few seconds of flickering, beryl is up and running.
I don't think that trying to install an ALPHA, 10.3 is still PRE-BETA, is the answer and you will probably be asking for more trouble by doing so. It may work for some but for the "day-in-and-day-out" user stick with the latest stable release for the OS part anyway. Just do some "googling" for NVIDIA and beryl and read some of the howto's. Using information from several different sources allowed me to come up with a solution that works, for the most part anyway, in my situation.
yea i duno if n e 1 uses sabayon but its beryls official distro, their advertisements make them sound like the best there is i duno if thats true cuz i never heard n e 1 talk about it. Back to the subject. Yea thats weird, when i had the nvidia driver that was out before 2 weeks(9746) i was doing what you are doing exactly starting up and reloading to get it to work, but i did have a few glitches with the minimizing etc. but when i put the driver that just just came out, the reload didnt even work nothing appeared from borders nd it dosent make sense, like i said im probly going to end up switching distros to see how it goes with that cuz suse feels like its getting a little heavy nd tangled up with little things, its the only distro ive used so far so i should def try something diff to see what i like more
i had errors galore installing beryl on openSUSE 10.2 with my ATI card, but i found if you search for and run opensuse-xgl-settings, then go on to the beryl tab and click on the install button, it installs the whole lot, and for me has worked problem free with no hassle whatsoever.

but if you click on the k menu and use the search bar at the top to find and run opensuse-xgl-settings, and just click on the tab which says beryl then choose install, it is really simple, you don't actually need to do anything, it should just work... did for me anyway, give it a shot if you have any problems ill see what i can do.

I do not get those results when i search for that in the kmenu.
I did the install via terminal commands to the T of the wiki page and it is installed but it fails when I launch it. I have posted my error messages on this thread in previous posts.
as far as your log goes.... i haven't got a clue.
heres how to do get that program seeing as you didn't find it, i thought it was in the standard installation, but it may not be...
go to yast into software management and search for xgl, and make sure you download xgl and the kde gui for it.
if it doesn't find it, add this in installation sources, and look again.
i reckon thats where it is, if those are installed you should get the opensuse-xgl-settings app
once that is installed, find the app and run it, its just a window with a load of tabs on it, choose beryl tab and install is there as an option.
i had it installed and not working and used this method and i have a stable working version, it is up to you if you want to uninstall what you got so far, but i installed over it and it is fine.
i use that program for enabling and disabling it aswell, as i couldn't find how to do it in beryl-settings-manager, but i only looked for a minute before i got impatient and just used that cos i knew it was there, im sure there is a setting somewhere.
well to now add another problem, I was installing webmin on my workstation to fiddle with a few things (going to roll out a file server for a macintosh lab in a bit) and when I tried installing it I got an error message saying I was out of disk space. I have 120gig sata HD installed and like nothing really running on it. I use the du command to figure out where it is. My home folder is 98 gigs...and here was the culprit.
I am running beryl in my thinkpad ibm x-40. It works great and performance is excellent. I use it for business.
In my workstation I had problem mainly with the video card/drivers. I had an ATI x800 pro and I tried to install the new drivers. 3D works, I can see the cube but the system is very unstable. For example if I try to go to the x console it freezes. I got tired of hassling with ATI drivers. Today I bought a new nvidia GTS 8800 320. I will install it in the next few days. After using beryl in my laptop without problems I need it in my desktop.
Beryl is not only for the looks. You become more productive. It is another dimension than the multiple desktops mainly when you work with many applications at the same time. Even I am running mythtv front end in one of the sides.
Tlarkin, I once had something similar to your problem. Every program you run through KDE writes console output to .xsession-errors and if some programs (like superkaramba in my case) have bugs, that can cause lots of output. Check the file to see what program caused this. You can delete the file afterwards as it's just a log file.
SlickNick,
I am brand new to beryl. I have one week old experience.
I am using opensuse 10.2. / KDE
1. I use the guide pointed by oojo in this thread.
2. First I installed in in a ThinkPad x40. The installation went very easy and it is working great.
3. I tried to install it in my workstation. It had an ATI x800 PRO video adapter. I tried the new drivers from the amd/ati site. I was able to see the cube but it was very unstable. I had a similar experience with the same setup with suse 10.1. After spending a lot time I thrashed the video card and I got a nvidia gts 8800 320 mb. Suddenly every thing works perfect. The installation was pretty simple and you must use the new beta driver for this 8800 series.
4. BTW compiz and beryl have joined efforts.
5. The couple of problem I had were answer in the guide mentioned above and now everything is OK.
6. In reference to nvidia just install it in level 3 and use the beta driver.
Ciao

Beryl works perfect and it is very responsive even in the laptop.
well I think that was caused by me trying to run beryl on my system since it would try to run and always end up crashing.
I ended up doing a wipe and reload because the OS was acting all janky after I tried to install the novell client. You'd think it would just work natively since Novell owns Suse and all...
Anyways, I will try running beryl one more time, and if it fails I think I will be done until it comes standard issue with suse, or maybe try it with a different video card/driver.
