hi all,

i am trying to use the command adduser on my suse linux 10.0, but its saying that adduser is not a command. i know all about the useradd, but that's not what i need. i need the adduser that specifically asks you to specify the username and password on the command line, as the username and password will be applied to specific directories and files. i have used this previsously on Debian unix on the system at my uni, up until this point everything on Debian and Suse seemed identical, but i couldn't even find the adduser.conf file, let alone get the adduser command to work.

can any1 help me with this? i would very much appriciate it.

Most Linux distros do not use "adduser" (I know Slack and Debian do).

"Adduser" isn't a valid command in SuSe. If you try to run a man page on it, it defaults over to the "useradd" man page. Just asking because I haven't played with it much, but can't you configure the user account(s) in YAST with the settings you want using the "Add/Edit User" to set user name and password and "Security Settings" to limit which directories and files they can access?

well, after about 72 hours of struggling with it to work, i went to my technician in university and he told me that adduser, useradd, and the GUI/YAST configuration pretty much do exactly the same thing but in different ways.

i needed to know the manual configuration for a project i am compiling for my coursework which requires me to add the users without using a GUI, thats why i needed trhe command line command.


but all is well now, i just used the 'useradd -m (username)' which created a user and a directory for that user in the /home directory, which is all i needed in the first place.
