Suggestions and Feedback

The slackware installation boots which Is awesome. In comparision FREEBSD is a dead fish.

Suggestion: I would have expected that the keyboard layout from "setup" will be also applied to the installed slackware on the disc.

The only available keyboard layout in kde was german - switzerland which differs a lot from the demanded german - austria or german - germany.

Wifi is also not setup during the setup phase. I know there is a different section in the slackware guide about wifi.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/WPA_supplicant

I used wpa_cli as suggested by the arch linux wiki.

My issue wiht wpa_cli was

FAIL
No idea why it says fail, but it also said fails for other guys on the net. I left it as is, as I will duplicate my working wpa_supplicant from gentoo later anyway.

The most annoying thing with Slackware is that any browser when it works gives me a lot of pop up messages telling me the certificate has run out on 29th of november 2017. for google, and those google tracker services and such. opening google.com was a pain.

It was kinda late so I stopped somehow than.

Suggestion: I assume a newer installer CD will not give the headache of such many popup windows in regard of outdated certificates., when only the certificates would be updated.

I put back my gentoo disc in my box, I still have slackware on my 1TB HDD. I just have set inactive the slackware bootloader in the meantime.

I need also need to read the docs first on configuring wifi, the package manager and the system.

Cons: Nouveau X driver + 660m GTX + 2GB VRAM is laggy like hell in KDE.

I want to get urbanterror on slackware running, so I can test the open source drivers. I know the performance on gentoo + binary blob glx driver.

Wish: I wish slackware would provide like sysrescue-cd some simple and lean desctop environment. I may have choosen the wrong ones. KDe is too many annoying animations. fvwx.... was also not to my likeing. I miss my i3wm.

LVDS brightness is dead, certain acpi keys are dead. fix => gentoo's i3wm config I created.

Slight off topic question.

I have never used nouveau except on sysrescue-cd

with the binary blob drivers I use nvidia-settings to detect screens, change resolutions and apply that.

e.g. external screen, this resolution, left of, primary is internal screen. apply done. or set inactive, apply done. The hardware acpi keys are dead. It is a kernel and UEFI issue. Basically won't fix.

How do you guys do that with nouveau?

Can't respond on the others, but you need to update the system. The install disc remains the same it was when it was first released, but Pat will put out updates as needed throughout the supported life of that version. The certificates have been updated along with many other packages. You can either download the updated packages from the patches/ directory on your favorite mirror, or you can set up slackpkg to download them for you.

I use a handcrafted /etc/X11/xorg.conf
There are subtle differences between the syntax for the proprietary nVidia driver and the nouveau driver. When I switched to nouveau from nVidia for this old setup, I needed to spend some time to get this working. The attached file may give some pointers.
I have a default server layout that boots to a single screen that is used when I boot directly to run level 4. If I want to use a different layout, I boot to run level 3 and run
Code:
startx -- -layout <LayoutName>
Attached Files
File Type: txt xorg.conf.txt (3.5 KB, 18 views)

I had the outdated certificate problem on our old desktop computer. Solved it temporarily by setting the time in the BIOS. Solved it premanently by changing the CMOS battery and then setting the time in the BIOS.

Also, why did you follow archlinux instructions for a Slackware install?

that was more for wpa_supplicant and not just archlinux specific
